The Interpretive Experience. A culture of one, shared.

As soon as we enter this world our senses start collecting information that is converted into an internal language that resides at the core of our being. These early sensory experiences begin the internal dialogue that will guide our social behavior and construct the mythology of our dreams. This innate process of converting experience into meaning is a life long task that generates endless vistas and twisted cities populated by the people we have met and fantastic creatures of our own making. As social beings we create common ground with each other, but each individual is still a separate culture. We can agree that a certain type of fruit will be called an apple, but the apple’s  associative meaning will vary from person to person. An apple farmer will define that fruit much differently than someone with an apple allergy.

My art is a bridge between the internal dialogue and the external world as I perceive it. It is an intrinsic language that I choose to share with the community. Much like the creation of a child, it is something that has grown within me, but becomes a separate thing unto itself…and it is this personal relationship with the creative process that makes me detest the 20th century’s obsession with “isms”( naturalism, cubism, surrealism, expressionism, neo-expressionism, post-modernism, deconstructionism…), as if we have to put modern art into an historical context before it is even created! This line of thinking imprisons the artist. For once you are identified with a certain “ism”, the majority of your work will be expected to stay within the boundaries of that visual genre.

All I ask of the world is that it allows me to pursue the creation of beauty on my own terms.

      Thanks Chris, it’s been several years since I’ve been in Vancouver; but I used to venture there (occasionally) when I lived in Bellingham Washington. It’s a beautiful city! I checked out your latest post, “Incomplete Circle On Square”- very nice! I agree with you on the asymmetry.

    Hi Paul;
    I see you’re continuing to put out, thought provoking art.
    The best kind of course! Thank you for all your feedback on my work.
    It is nice to be appreciated… even when it’s not the driving force for the work…
    Kind of like sugar or gravy; a little bit is terrific, too much can be trouble.
    cheers
    chris
